How it works
Pythagorean numerology maps each letter to a number from 1 to 9 in alphabetical order: A to I are 1 to 9, J to R repeat 1 to 9, and S to Z are 1 to 8. Accents are stripped before the mapping, so a Vietnamese name converts the same way its unaccented spelling would.
Every total is reduced by summing its digits until one digit is left, except for the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, which stand. Reducing each component before adding — day, month and year separately — is the standard method: summing all the digits at once loses a master number that appears in the year alone.
Five core numbers come from the name and the date: the life path from the birth date, the expression from every letter, the soul urge from the vowels, the personality from the consonants, and the birthday from the day of the month. Four secondary indices fill the picture in: attitude (day plus month), maturity (life path plus expression), balance (the initial of each part of the name) and rational thought (birth day plus every letter).
The birth chart places the digits of the birth date on a 3×3 grid laid out 3-6-9 / 2-5-8 / 1-4-7. Zero has no cell and drops out. A row, column or diagonal with all three cells filled is an arrow of strength; one with all three empty is the matching gap. A partly filled line says nothing either way, so this page does not report one.
The pyramid divides a life into four stages. The first ends at 36 minus the life path and the next three run nine years each. Every stage carries a pinnacle — the opportunity — and a challenge. Challenges are differences, so they run 0 to 8 and are never master numbers; a challenge of 0 is a real value meaning no single lesson dominates.
Formula
Life path = reduce( reduce(day) + reduce(month) + reduce(year) )
To reduce is to sum the digits until one is left, stopping at 11, 22 or 33. If any total along the way is 13, 14, 16 or 19, that is a karmic debt — even though the final digit no longer shows it.
Worked example
Someone born on 15 June 1990:
- Reduce the day
- 15 → 1 + 5 = 6
- Reduce the month
- 6 → 6
- Reduce the year
- 1990 → 19 → 10 → 1
- Add them
- 6 + 6 + 1 = 13
- Life path
- 13 → 1 + 3 = 4
- Karmic debt
- Yes — the total passes through 13
- First stage ends at
- 36 − 4 = age 32
The life path is 4. The 13 on the way down is what a bare 4 cannot show, which is why this page keeps the whole reduction chain rather than only its last value.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the life path and the expression number?
The life path comes from your birth date, the expression from your name. A birth date cannot change, so the life path is read as the default road; a name can, so the expression is read as what you carry and show.
Should I enter my birth name or the name I use?
The standard method uses the full name as given at birth, middle names included. Trying the name you actually use is fine — just read the two as separate perspectives rather than mixing them.
How are accented names handled?
Accents are removed before the letters are converted, and Đ is read as D. "Nguyễn Văn Đức" and "Nguyen Van Duc" therefore give the same numbers.
What are the master numbers 11, 22 and 33?
They are three totals that are not reduced further. This page keeps them for the five core numbers and the maturity number, as convention has it, and reduces the secondary indices and the personal year all the way to 1–9, because that is the scale those are defined on.
What does a karmic debt of 13, 14, 16 or 19 mean?
They are four totals read as a lesson to be paid rather than a step passed over. They are detected from the reduction chain: 14 and 5 land on the same digit, and only one of them is a debt.
Is an empty cell in the birth chart bad?
No. An empty cell only means that digit is absent from the birth date, which is a trait to develop rather than an omen. It becomes a named gap only when all three cells of a row, column or diagonal are empty together.
Does the personal year follow the calendar or my birthday?
This page uses the calendar year of the date in the "reading for" field. Some schools turn the personal year on the birthday instead; if you follow that one, pick a date after your birthday to compare.
How accurate is this?
The arithmetic is exact and tested: the same name and date always give the same numbers. The interpretation is not — numerology is a cultural system with no scientific basis, and is best read as a prompt for reflection rather than a prediction.
